I'm not too experienced with this genre, so everything I say is from an amateur spectator's point of view (and as always just my personal opinion.
As a kid growing up I used to love watching the old fashioned hospital shows like Sisters and the immortal ER (not much of a Scrubs fan, watched all first 5 seasons of House. For me - Contagion was one long ER episode, and that's a big compliment.
The story is compelling and interesting, and shows a very realistic picture of human behavior is the described situations. Everything is relatable and easy to follow. While not too original, it's fun to watch and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Unlike what the audience might think in the beginning - finding the life saving vaccine to the plague described doesn't end the film, but rather only starts another aspect of it.
As for the ending - it as a nice wrap up, finally showing us the origin of the problem - but I felt it lacked a twist. All in all - enjoyable and good, definitely worth watching. But objectively - nothing special.

Having heard the concept and seeing the advertisements, it seemed like just an above average viral thriller but in which it'd be at the very least intriguing. My expectations vs. the entire film couldn't possibly be different. Let me just say, any of your expectations of the film will not be how it plays out. This is one of the most odd, unique, and oddball films I've seen all year, but that's why I liked it. The director takes a cliché but flushes it out so incredibly that the execution is exquisite and leaves you breathless. And for a PG-13, this was pretty damn dark. The picture was so morbid and unnerving, it felt like watching an R-rated drama/horror. Some scenes will leave you tense, on the edge of your seat. I can easily say "Contagion" scared me more than "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. But who cares how unsettling it is? It boasts fantastic performances, a slick soundtrack, and some of the best direction I've seen of all this year.
First off, the premise is incredibly intimidating. Just in the opening scene, I was mesmerized yet simultaneously off-put. The score is very techno, but just is perfect in the scenes used. The story is well handled and the film takes you to places you wouldn't expect it to take you. Moreover, the performances are nothing short of perfect. You can feel every emotion, speak every word, and connect to them. From Damon to Winslet, the cast delivered. But what truly makes this movie stick out is the direction. Words can't describe the sheer oddity and horror the film presents itself with. The last three minutes left me still in my seat, hairs trickling on my back, and a loss of words. When a film can do that, you know you have a winner.
However, Contagion" isn't entirely perfect. Fire and foremost, the pacing. The film is mostly paced effectively, but some scenes are just very tedious to sit through. Dialogue may prolong a scene or a part in the film could've been excised. Also, while the entire film is just one great experience, I feel the rest of the film could not compete with the powerful opening and closing. In that light, it's a semi-disappointment, but a good film is still a good one.
Forget the long-term affects, I want "Contagion" to infect me. It speaks out and promises what it delivers and then-some. The cast is terrific, the score is bold, and the picture is daring. Out of all the crap I had to endure this year, it's refreshing to still see good, quality movies being made. Or maybe it's because Oscar movie season is coming soon? Either way, go pay those 10 bucks and support good films. Movies like these come a dime a dozen.
